On Tuesday, June 2, 2026, the Kwahu West Municipal Assembly (KWMA), led by the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. Tamimu Halidu, engaged workers and traders at the Nkawkaw Timber Market as part of the Assembly’s ongoing community engagement programme aimed at strengthening collaboration with stakeholders and addressing concerns affecting local economic activities.
The engagement provided a platform for workers to share challenges confronting the timber industry while discussing possible interventions with the Assembly.
Traders Appeal for Intervention Over Operational Challenges
During the meeting, workers appealed to the government through the Municipal Chief Executive to intervene in challenges they said were affecting their businesses.
According to the traders, although they continue to fulfill their tax obligations to both central government and local authorities, they have been experiencing operational difficulties resulting from the enforcement activities of the Forestry Commission.
The workers indicated that seizures of timber products, disruptions to operations, and other regulatory actions have created uncertainty within the industry, affecting productivity and the livelihoods of many traders and artisans.
They stressed that the timber market remains a major source of employment for many residents in Nkawkaw and surrounding communities, warning that continued challenges could negatively impact thousands of families who depend on the sector for their daily income.
While acknowledging the need for sustainable forest management and adherence to regulations, the traders called for a balanced approach that would safeguard livelihoods while ensuring compliance with forestry laws.
Overcrowding at Market Raises Concerns
The workers also highlighted the issue of congestion within the timber market, explaining that the available space has become inadequate for the growing number of operators and activities taking place at the facility.
According to them, the overcrowded conditions affect movement, productivity and the overall working environment, prompting calls for a larger and more suitable location.
MCE Assures Workers of Assembly’s Support
Responding to the concerns, Hon. Tamimu Halidu assured the workers that the Assembly would continue to engage relevant stakeholders to find practical solutions to the challenges confronting the market.
Addressing concerns about congestion, the MCE pledged to work towards securing a new site that would provide a more conducive environment for timber market operations and support the growth of the industry.
He reiterated the Assembly’s commitment to supporting businesses that contribute significantly to local economic development and job creation.
Call for Public-Private Partnerships
Hon. Tamimu Halidu also encouraged the workers to collaborate closely with the Assembly and explore opportunities through Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) to support infrastructure development and improve conditions within the timber market.
He noted that stronger cooperation between the private sector and local authorities could help unlock opportunities for growth and modernization.
Safety and Health Remain a Priority
The Municipal Chief Executive further urged workers to prioritize occupational safety and health in their daily activities.
He advised them to consistently wear appropriate protective equipment, including nose masks, safety goggles and other safety gear, explaining that wood processing activities generate dust that can pose serious health risks when proper precautions are not taken.
The MCE emphasized that adherence to safety measures would help prevent workplace accidents, injuries and long-term health complications among workers.
Commitment to Continuous Stakeholder Engagement
The June 2 engagement forms part of the Assembly’s broader efforts to maintain regular interaction with communities, businesses and stakeholder groups across the municipality.
Through such engagements, the Assembly seeks to identify challenges, strengthen partnerships and develop solutions that promote economic growth, improve livelihoods and advance development within the Kwahu West Municipality.
